Winter Baby - Edmonton Stylized Child Photography

Do you recognize this baby? I was lucky enough to photograph her when she was a newborn (as well as her big brother and many family sessions!) and she came to visit me this winter to do a special styled shoot.

Isn't she just the sweetest little angel?! Thank you for bringing your smiles and giggles!

Do you wanna build a snowman?

The songs have been stuck in the heads of kids and parents alike for months, even writing that sentence has put that particular song in my head.

In short, I couldn't have been more thrilled to get a visit from little Anna and Elsa!

Elsa even made the snow appear briefly, the cold may not bother her, but it certainly gets to her sister Anna. Though really, Anna was more concerned with her lunch, which was of course, sandwiches!

If only Olaf and Sven would have made an appearance. Though I figure that Olaf was probably sunning himself somewhere nice. Sven was probably sneaking carrots while Kristoff was working selling ice.

Autumn Dream A Custom Fairytale - Edmonton Fairytale Photographer

A couple of years ago, I created this little story after a shoot in autumn woods with my daughter. I wanted to transfer it to this blog awhile ago, but time ran away with me and soon the memory followed. For those wanting an example of a custom made fairy tale, here you go!

Once upon a time, in a land not far from your window's view, a little girl went for a walk on an Autumn day.

The leaf strewn path led her deeper and deeper into the enchanted wood. She followed along until her strength began to weaken. She wished the fae to lead her to a spot where she could rest her head.

Against the trunk of a very wise tree, the girl fell into a peaceful slumber...

and awoke, a Princess.

Welcomed greatly by the spirits and tiny creatures, she began her reign.

Wise and just, she ruled the Autumn wood with an incomparable grace.

But heavy is the head that wears the crown. Soon the little Princess longed to return to her home and family.

Quite suddenly, she woke. Her body still against the tree from which she had first slumbered.

But she could not forget her kingdom, and so before heading home after her very long journey the once Princess explored that which was hers to guard.

For if she should ever wish to return,

she only had to seek ...

 and dream...

of her kingdom in the Autumn Wood.

Inspired - Edmonton Portrait Photography

I have mentioned before that my personal work is highly inspired by books. Many times I will just be reading something and an image of a scene will appear. Something that I need to create.

“I want the things most people don’t notice. The ring and the key and the way you have of wearing everything on the inside.” ― Victoria Schwab, The Archived

“I pull the key from around my neck and slip it into the hole beneath my brother’s card. It doesn’t turn. It never turns. But I never stop trying.” ― Victoria Schwab, The Archived

"Does the bird feel the weight of its wings?"  ― Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone

This won't be the last time that these authors will appear as influences in my work. I hope you'll stick around to see what happens next.

Planning - Edmonton Photographer

Oh winter in Alberta. These things we all come to know, and having lived in this province my whole life, come to expect. The unseasonal warmth we recently welcomed didn't last, but who amongst us really expected it to.

I have spent much of the past month in Edson, sledding and getting trapped in massive amounts of snow. It's been fun. I'll be returning there soon.

For many of those that I know, the big problem with winter is the cold and the snow. I understand, especially when the temperatures drop and playing outside becomes dangerous. Even my camera stops working when it is far too cold.

That all makes the winter lonely, picture wise. My head is filled with ideas and people long to go adventuring, but sometimes we must wait for spring. And surely, with the recent warmth and light bursting through our windows, the longing has increased greatly.

We plan our gardens, and hope for May flowers. We dream of June weddings and the fall of cherry blossoms. We see life exploding before our eyes, we float on seas of greens and sky blue.

Booking is always available, even when the weather isn't cooperating. While you dream of sunny days ahead, travels to far off lands, adventures with loved ones... we can plan to capture memories of your family just as they are. We can create a magical world for your children to be immortalized with. Let us dream, and plan, and create. Let there be a chance to see in yourself all that you are, all that you could be.

Pheonix Reborn - Edmonton Portrait Photography

"There was a silly damn bird called a phoenix back before Christ, every few hundred years he built a pyre and burnt himself up. He must have been first cousin to man. But every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of the ashes, he got himself born all over again. And it looks like we're doing the same thing, over and over, but we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had. We know the damn silly thing we just did."

Oh Mr. Bradbury, how your words inspire my creativity. That quote is from the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

If you've never read the novel, firstly, get yourself to a library or bookstore! It's set in a dark future, one where firemen start fires instead of putting them out. They burn books and the government considers them to be dangerous things. But one fireman changes everything.

“We're going to meet a lot of lonely people in the next week and the next month and the next year. And when they ask us what we're doing, you can say, We're remembering. That's where we'll win out in the long run. And someday we'll remember so much that we'll build the biggest goddamn steamshovel in history and dig the biggest grave of all time and shove war in it and cover it up.”
