Inspired - Edmonton Portrait Photography

I have mentioned before that my personal work is highly inspired by books. Many times I will just be reading something and an image of a scene will appear. Something that I need to create.

“I want the things most people don’t notice. The ring and the key and the way you have of wearing everything on the inside.” ― Victoria Schwab, The Archived

“I pull the key from around my neck and slip it into the hole beneath my brother’s card. It doesn’t turn. It never turns. But I never stop trying.” ― Victoria Schwab, The Archived

"Does the bird feel the weight of its wings?"  ― Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone

This won't be the last time that these authors will appear as influences in my work. I hope you'll stick around to see what happens next.

Planning - Edmonton Photographer

Oh winter in Alberta. These things we all come to know, and having lived in this province my whole life, come to expect. The unseasonal warmth we recently welcomed didn't last, but who amongst us really expected it to.

I have spent much of the past month in Edson, sledding and getting trapped in massive amounts of snow. It's been fun. I'll be returning there soon.

For many of those that I know, the big problem with winter is the cold and the snow. I understand, especially when the temperatures drop and playing outside becomes dangerous. Even my camera stops working when it is far too cold.

That all makes the winter lonely, picture wise. My head is filled with ideas and people long to go adventuring, but sometimes we must wait for spring. And surely, with the recent warmth and light bursting through our windows, the longing has increased greatly.

We plan our gardens, and hope for May flowers. We dream of June weddings and the fall of cherry blossoms. We see life exploding before our eyes, we float on seas of greens and sky blue.

Booking is always available, even when the weather isn't cooperating. While you dream of sunny days ahead, travels to far off lands, adventures with loved ones... we can plan to capture memories of your family just as they are. We can create a magical world for your children to be immortalized with. Let us dream, and plan, and create. Let there be a chance to see in yourself all that you are, all that you could be.

I cannot wait to meet and photograph you.

Christmas Mini Sessions - Edmonton Family Photography

A blizzard hit. The roads were terrible, snow blanketed the earth, and a chill filled the air. Really, is there anything more true for an Edmonton Christmas? Nope, not really. Even my toes froze through my new winter boots.

These families braved the roads and the cold to come out to The Mactaggart Sanctuary. I love this location and the snow did not disappoint. Just look at how pretty the blizzard made everything!

With snow sparkling our vision we captured some memories. We have snow for how many months of the year in Edmonton? It's a big part of our lives and at the end, will be a big part of our memories as well.

These were my last mini sessions until Spring. Next year, I will only be offering mini sessions 3 times, and I will of course post when that information is available.

Also, for those who are still wanting sessions in time for Christmas, I still have availability for the rest of November and December! Send me a message so that we can book your session!

Welcome to Five - Edmonton Child Photography

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter turned 5. We initially were going to do her birthday images outside but the cold prevented that from happening. Instead we made use of her bedroom and he princess canopy, which she calls her beauty, for beauty sleep. My girl is growing up.

I don't know that there is anything out there that is more bittersweet. My baby is growing up. I'm happy about it, excited and proud of the person she is becoming. I marvel in the new things she can do. She tells me that she can't wait to grow up. I look at her, amazed and think... but no, just stay like this for a little while longer. Just stay little for a little while longer. I'm not ready for you to be grown just yet.

I know that nothing good lasts forever.

There she is, with stardust in her eyes...

A Little Bit Of Holiday - Edmonton Family Photography

I love these two.

Sometimes saying much else is hard. I do love them. I've been friends with them for awhile now, though exactly how long I won't say.

And on this day, we decided that we needed a little Christmas. So out came the ornaments and into the very blustery day we went!

I won't show more then this for now, I wouldn't want to ruin any surprises for holiday cards. but we did have fun decorating the trees and stealing freshly baked Christmas cookies.

The End of Autumn - Edmonton Family Photography

This session happened before Halloween, which is why it's still all lovely and golden. This family and I took a stroll around the John Janzen Nature Center to capture moments. We had fun playing in leaves and boy oh boy was there a lot of them.

We walked and talked, discovered things we have in common (attachment parenting ftw!) and just let the little guy be himself. I hope that I'll get to see this beautiful family again!

Christmas Mini Sessions - Edmonton Family Photography

I know, I know, it's not even Halloween yet and here I am telling you about Christmas mini sessions. Please believe me, I do understand. Though sometimes things need to be planned in advance. Like Christmas cards. It won't be long now before we are knee deep in gift shopping and the pace of the mail system will show why it's often called snail mail.

This will be the last mini sessions I offer until Spring. And they'll be holiday themed! I'll be bringing along props and setting up some decorations to give a holiday feel to your images. Perfect for gifting, cards, and to just spread that joyous feeling throughout the season!

November 16th and 17th.

Taking place the Mactaggart Sanctuary.

Spaces must be booked in advance.

Available times each day:

Thankful - Edmonton Maternity Photography

All of my sessions are special to me. I am thankful for every client that trusts me with their memories. I'm thankful for everyone who likes the images I create and for those who allow me into their lives for a short time. This session is special to me for a number of reasons. The first being that this is a dear friend of mine and soon she's going to be the mom of a beautiful baby girl. The second being that I shot her wedding in September 2012. That is 2 pretty incredible life moments that I have gotten to document and really it means the world to me. The little girl who will make this woman a mother for the first time is coming into a family filled with love, and her arrival is eagerly awaited.

One Autumn Afternoon Part 6 - Edmonton Family Photography

Just look at this bright and bubbly family. So much energy and excitement came with their session! I really love when families are willing to be silly and have fun with their photos. I think it shows more truth and more beauty. And these guys were not of smiles and happiness for their session. I hope that I'll get to see them again!

One Autumn Afternoon Part 5 - Edmonton Family Photography

This little guy wasn't too sure about me or the fedora wearing secret agent platapus that sits on the end of my camera. But I think we captured some beautiful moments for his family. They were so much fun, being silly and playing, just being themselves and letting me capture it. I hope that I'll get to photograph them again!

One Autumn Afternoon Part 4 - Edmonton Family Photography

This family is pretty special in my books. Why? Because that's one of my beautiful sisters in law with her kids! He was always on the go, searching the woods, shaking leaves from the trees, and turning sticks into swords. She wasn't feeling that good, so seriousness ruled the day, as well as cuddles from her mommy.

One Autumn Afternoon Part 3 - Edmonton Couples Photography

Let's take a moment to talk about how cute these two are together, shall we? This was their first photo shoot together, and I hope that it won't be their last! They completely rocked it. I don't get the opportunity to shoot couples that often but it can be a lot of fun, especially when you are as happy as these two.

One Autumn Afternoon Part 2 - Edmonton Family Photography

This wasn't my first time meeting this lovely family. I have been photographing this little charmer since he was 3 months old. Which, in my books, makes me a pretty lucky photographer. We had so much fun exploring the through the trees, still holding their leaves. There was a ball and some catch. Just some time in an autumn kissed park with a family enjoying being together. What could be better then that?

One Autumn Afternoon Part 1 - Edmonton Family Photography

On a cool Autumn afternoon I met with some beautiful families for mini sessions. This family was first up and aren't those girls just adorable?! They certainly made me work for those smiles but we had so much fun!

Pheonix Reborn - Edmonton Portrait Photography

"There was a silly damn bird called a phoenix back before Christ, every few hundred years he built a pyre and burnt himself up. He must have been first cousin to man. But every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of the ashes, he got himself born all over again. And it looks like we're doing the same thing, over and over, but we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had. We know the damn silly thing we just did."

Oh Mr. Bradbury, how your words inspire my creativity. That quote is from the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

If you've never read the novel, firstly, get yourself to a library or bookstore! It's set in a dark future, one where firemen start fires instead of putting them out. They burn books and the government considers them to be dangerous things. But one fireman changes everything.

“We're going to meet a lot of lonely people in the next week and the next month and the next year. And when they ask us what we're doing, you can say, We're remembering. That's where we'll win out in the long run. And someday we'll remember so much that we'll build the biggest goddamn steamshovel in history and dig the biggest grave of all time and shove war in it and cover it up.”

Remembering - Edmonton Family Photography

I have been a bit absent from here... This is why.

My life is run on routine. Things have to be done in an order, as they have been.

Until little over 2 weeks ago, my days started with loud, impatient meowing. I'd rush from bed, hoping that my daughter hadn't been woken up and stumbling, I'd feed my very hungry kitty.

My days ended with trying not to trip over her in the darkness after saying goodnight and running through my night time routines.

The first and last stops during the grocery shopping trips were always for our cat.

2 weeks ago today, that all stopped and my heart is broken.

Let me tell you about Myth.

She would have been 7 in January.

She was already a crotchety old lady. She feared people and felt the need to protect us from anyone who came to our house. She didn't like people outside of our little family and she tolerated those that often visited us. She defended us from everyone else.

When my daughter was born, Myth stood guard in the doorway of Llusion's room all night. If Llusion cried, Myth would come and get me. Myth slept near her until she was 3.

When we first got her, we lived in a house with stairs. She was so tiny that she couldn't actually get up and down the stairs on her own. We had to carry her back and forth.

She liked to look out the livingroom window and watch the birds. She never meowed at them, instead choosing to make high pitched squeals and clicks at them. It was funny to watch.

She didn't like going outside until a couple of years ago. We put in a garden this year and she quickly claimed 2 spots as hers. Beside the barley and under Llusion's sunflowers.

She was incredibly quiet, except when she was hungry or lonely.

She would knock on the bathroom door to wake me up. If that didn't work, she would go to Llusion's room and cry as loudly as she could.

She never stayed mad long.

She only liked to eat fish.

Sometimes, she slept beside me. Cuddling like a little baby, sleeping on her side, using my arm as a pillow. Other times she held my legs down.

I am used to starting and ending my day with her. She was one of my children, my first baby. We made trips based around how long she could handle being alone by herself (she didn't like being alone).

My house feels weird without her here. It's too quiet. We miss her.

1979 - Edmonton Child Photography

My mother is not one for dresses or fancy frocks. So when we were visiting and I saw this beautiful dress amongst sparkling fabric, resting at the very back of her closet, I knew we just had to use it for something.

This one is special. It's why it was hiding in the closet. This is my mother's prom dress, from 1979. It's one of those dresses that only gets worn once. It was definitely time to bring it out again.

We pinned it back on my daughter and went out to pose in Grammie's dress. I fell in love with what we captured together. I hope that you will like them too.
